Review

This was a very sweet book, filled with great stories that make us reconsider our lives. Set in the past, we see many differences from our world today but there are some places where people still think like this.
Real life heart braking stories. Makes me wonder what we can do to help them.

The characters are realistic, very different from each other. You have the good girls and the bad boys, but it doesn't evolve as usual. The perfect girl that is always kind makes a mistake, very realistic. When she realizes it, but not by herself, makes me think of how many times I've tried telling others what they were doing was wrong but not seeing that I've made the same mistakes. Sometimes we focus on others but forget to look at what we do and if what we say is also the way we act.
I was a little surprised in the beginning by the evolution of two characters. I assumed things would be different for both characters and it turned out I was wrong.
" 'Yes, well, one would certainly find it, Mr. O'Connor, if one were inclined to look beyond a pretty face, you know, into the heart and soul.' "
How would you feel if you found out they were competing against each other for you like some sort of prize? Even if they said in the end it was your choice.
" 'I know your reputation,' she said softly, 'and frankly, that's more than enough to give me pause.' "
"Deemed imperfect by imperfect people"
I know we shouldn't judge others because who are we to say what they're doing wrong if we're not perfect either? But our reputation is important to others. We have to be careful with it because when the time comes and we decide we want to grow up and do things the right way, it might be too late for others to trust us.
In the other hand, I do believe people can change. If we think we know how others will act based on what everyone else says. We have to know that they might be willing to be better and we should be there to help them.
We see how kindness and humbleness are things we should consider in our lives.
I liked the way the author writes, this is the first book I've read but she has a way to make you think and enjoy her stories. I couldn't put down the book since I started reading it.
There were some things I didn't agree, maybe it's because it's based in 1895 and our thoughts have changed a lot since then. The truth is I'm glad that I was born in this era because we have so much freedom compared to back then.

Favorite parts:
The tough guy has a nice heart. Just my type! "Well, blame it on the fact I'm an only child who wishes she were from a big family where love flows like water." I felt like this most of my life. Until about 5 years ago, I was an only child and hated it.

  1. Love triangle? YES. And historical? This sounds like a winner to me! I was actually surprised you were okay with this, since you usually don't care for two love interests.

    1. Lol, I can read books with love triangles, it's just that I don't share their oppinions.. This book was a suggestion from the author for the Irish challenge and she was kind enough to offer me to be part of the tour. But it is very good, I don't agree with the main character on some things but I think there were so many similar cases back then. We have different ideas now and I don't see how that's possible, although it still happens. I see it on friends and family as well, ok maybe it's only me lol

  2. I am so glad we are born in this era as well! So much is different now, but I want the right to vote and work and do things women were not able to in the past. I love what you say about making mistake and judging others. Reputations are pretty important whether we want them to be or not. Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. Yes, the freedom we have now is awesome, I just don't know how I would have felt if I'd been born in the past. Judging others and looking past our mistakes is very common and very important, I think things would be better if we were to stop and think before we acted.

I am SO impressed with your thoughts on the book and thank you for writing such a thoughtful AND thought-provoking review!! I love a reviewer who digs down into a book to glean things for her/him personally -- indicates a very deep reader, which are my favorite kind!

    1. Thank you for the opportunity. It was an awesome book, I want to read the others, hopefully I'll get to them soon. There were some surprises there that I didn't see coming. There were so many things where I thought, those answers are for me and I wonder the same thing. I related with her on some things but there were other parts where I wanted to make her see things from my perspective. Maybe it's my way of thinking that's in the wat of getting the end she has, I should consider that.
Thanks for coming, hope you had a great St Pat's and have a great week.

  6. Sounds like a good book with lots of lessons to learn. I really like that quote about looking beyond a pretty face and looking into the heart and soul! I wish more people did this. I'm not really into historical fiction but based off of your review, I may end up liking it! I love this century but wish that some values that existed back then still did now. *le sigh*

    1. I thought I didn't like historical fiction, but I think I had a different concept of what it was. This is an awesome story with lots of lessons but the only thing I'd say that makes it historical is the fact that is based in the 1890s. I thought that too, about the values but reading this makes me wonder if it's just like today, not everyone shares the same values.
